Evening meeting programme

7th March 2024
Our Newsletter Editor Sally Whitworth will tell us about "Westgate-on-Sea - a new town".

4th April
"Boys and girls, come out to play." Dolls, teddies, yo-yos, train sets - what toys did you play with as a child? A playful talk by Felicity Stafford, Society vice-president and Trustee of Margate Museum Trust.

2nd May
Michael Cates talking about "Margate Millers". Michael is a long-standing expert on windmills, with particular emphasis on Margate's Drapers Mill.

6th June
On the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, we are pleased to have Steve Hookins giving us "A short talk on the longest day", taking the form of a virtual battlefield tour.

4th July
The presentation of the 2024 Town Pride Awards, followed by complimentary refreshments.

Guests £4.50 entrance to this meeting.

5th September
Another of our vice-presidents, Robin Colyer, will tell all about rural unrest in East Kent in the 1830s in a talk entitled "We will burn your barns".

3rd October
Our Annual General Meeting followed by Gordon Clarkson telling us about "My life in the theatre and the world of entertainment". Gordon is well-known as a Margate-born theatre producer, entertainer, writer and public speaker.

Guest £4.50 entrance to this meeting.

All meetings start at 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Church Hall, St Mary's Avenue, Margate CT9 3TN.

Following the October meeting, we break until March next year, with meetings then each month until October (except August).

Meetings are FREE to members. There is a charge of £3.50 for visitors except where shown otherwise. Refreshments and merchandise will be on sale at all meetings.

The programme of talks for the 2017/18 winter season is as follows.

5th October 2017
Annual General Meeting followed by a talk on “The Secret Gardens of Sandwich” by Steve Edney (Head Gardener)

2nd November 2017
“The Vikings are Coming”, a talk by Imogen Corrigan, Lecturer on Anglo-Saxon & Medieval History of Art.

14th December 2017
Our Christmas social evening, including films, our Christmas raffle, our quiz and refreshments. Guests £3.50.

1st February 2018
A big welcome back to Dr Steve Alexander with another talk about his father’s marvellous paintings, this time those on a Mediterranean theme.

1st March 2018
Rod LeGear MCIfA, Vice President, Kent Archaeological Society, Chairman, Kent Underground Research Group giving a talk entitled "Margate Caves and Thanet's Underground Heritage".

5th April 2018
“Public Timekeeping on the Isle of Thanet” by another of our favourite speakers, Mike Bundock.

10th May 2018
Presentation of the Town Pride awards. Guests £3.50.

Annual General Meeting followed by “The Bungalow Story” by Andrew Brown PhD BA MCHA, Planning Director of Southeast Planning Group, Historic England. This is subject to confirmation.

1st November 2018
“Time to Thank Them” by John Drewry, Patron of the Nursing Memorial Appeal.

Our December 2018 (on Thursday 13th) meeting with be a special occasion to mark our 50th anniversary.
